I feel :) :D :( :'''(

Well... I'm back in the USA! I literally cannot believe it; That semester flew by.
....but I saw and experienced so much and made ever lasting bonds with some wonderful people.
These last 2 weeks I have had a lot of "LASTS".

First, on Monday I had my last service learning at the Hospital San Rafael. It was really hard to say goodbye to Pilar (the head of the volunteer program) and when we did.. I cried.. one of many times this week haha and she gave us big hugs and kisses on the cheek.. like the Spaniards do :) and then she told us how much she appreciated all we had done for the patients and that we really did make a difference in their day and their lives.. which was absolutely wonderful to hear. She also told us if we want to come back to Spain we are always welcome in her home AND then she gave us a free calendar of Juan Belmonte who is a famous toreador here in Spain. It was actually really neat! but there was a gal on the street when I was walking home who didn't know English or Spanish very well but she tried to tell me in Spanish that she loved him and asked where she could get a calender like it.. so I decided just to give her mine because she seemed nice AND she talked to me in Spanish first rather than English which I always like when that happens :) haha Anyway, it was a sad time leaving the hospital for the last time.. but the time I had there was very worthwhile and was a wonderful opportunity for me.

Wednesday we had out last intercultural meeting with Veronica.. where she told us again how much she loves us and will miss us.. and started crying.. so naturally we all did.. and she gave us this great paper that has a lot of questions on it to help us get back in to the swing of things at home and to not experience as much re-entry shock when we get home. ....very helpful.
That night I had my last volunteering experience at Huerta Del Rosillas and this one was even harder for me because Maria (the head of the program there) is one of my favorite people I have met on this journey and saying goodbye to her was unbelievably rough. She is such an inspirational woman and a whole lot of fun. I had a blast helping out the residents and spending time with them dancing and sharing tapas and being a light in their life, and them in mine. For one of my classes I had to keep journals and write a ton of papers about my experiences every week for my volunteer sites so I have a lot more in dept insights in to my opinions and occurrences at the sites.. but they are typed in Spanish. haha
Thursday we had or Cena de Despedida (Goodbye Dinner). Veronica, Jose, and Christina took our entire program out to eat at a really fancy restaurant so we were all dressed up and it was a blast! Everyone took a bjillion pictures and we shared memories.. highs and lows of our trip and our favorite parts.. it was great. Also.. the food was ballaaaa. We started out with drinks and tapas which was a kind of melted cheese.. a first for Spain! Then we got a tooon of this really good spiced bread.. then some kind of burrito type thing.. then a chicken salad ohh gosh it was good and it had some sort of white dressing, not just olive oil! ..then pesto pasta.. then dessert... oh gosh, we got a tray per table of mango ice cream, a chocolate brownie drizzled in more chocolate, and then a cheesecake. YUM.
I may or may not have gained 10 lbs from this one meal. haha It was so fun!!!

Friday Anna Marie, Brielle, Kelsey, Rob, Katie, and I went to Nerja for our final weekend in Spain! Kels and I had class.. and since I skipped 2 when my mom was here I couldn't miss again SO we had to go.. but once 1pm hit we headed for the bus station and were on our way to Nerja.

On Saturday the rest of our program joined us on the beach with Veronica. It was HOT. Apparently we are having a heat wave from Africa.. haha that's weird to say.. but yah it's been about 95 degrees here these past couple of weeks and I can't complain because I love the heat. But, yah it is reeeally hot here. We spent the entire weekend on the beach soaking up the sun and enjoying our time together. It was really great to relax and hang out with the people I have grown the closest to here. We noticed that as the semester went on our vacations became more about getting together to hang out and watch movies and chat together rather than to race around and kill ourselves trying to see everything. We didn't get to hang out like this in Granada because the houses are too small to have friends over and my room is especially itty bitty. So, when we traveled it was fun to have "slumber parties" which I take for granted in the US.

Keley, Brielle, Katie, me, and Anna Marie

Also, when my mom and I were in Nerja we didn't have any problems with people being rude.. but this time on Saturday we had 3 different occasions where this was a problem. The first was a Spaniard and he yelled at my friends and I and told us that we were stupid ignorant Americans and we know nothing about the world. Then literally 1 min later a lady walked past us and went pssshhtt Americans, foolish pigs... in English. ha we couldn't believe it. We literally were doing nothing but walking... but it just goes to show that no matter what we do as a country there will always be people in the world who hate Americans. It's too bad really. THEN that night Anna Marie and I were walking to the supermarket to buy more fruit and this Arab looking man starting speed walking next to us and was saying, again in English, "You were kidnapped. You were kidnapped at birth from Africa." He repeated that about 4 times.. then muttered words we had no idea what they were.. then told us that we needed to find our real Ala. <<< uuuh, yikes. We literally were almost jogging we were fast walking so fast to get away from him. haha Anyway, Nerja was great and beautiful as always... just found a few loonies who apparently don't like Americans. Usually when in Spain we didn't have any problems with that.

Monday in class I had to give a cultural presentation, so naturally, I did mine about the 4th of July. :)
They thought our family's typical 4th of July seemed like a blast and they especially liked the picture of Nick's USA beard. Family.. you are all officially famous in Spain :) haha
That afternoon Tayler and I went to Yo10 which is a HUGE really nice gym and spa near my house here. Our host brother's wife gave us each a free day pass to try.. which we had been dying to see inside! So we finally got the chance to! After lunch we went and took a class called Body Pump.. where I almost peed my pants because the instructor was so buff and intimidating and well it was scary.. but it ended up being sweet and the next day my arms and legs almost fell off I swear. SORE. haha it was really fun though! Then we ran and worked out on the bikes and other machines.. then went to the spa! Ohhhh yes, they have a spa in the basement. It had mood lighting, was so warm, and then had soft music playing. There were reeeeeally long looking hot tubes with water falls and massage chairs.. and yah, it was heaven. That place rocks! We were there for 3 hours.. :)

That night we had our LAST intercambio with Helena and we went over to her house for dinner. It was neat to see where she lives and we got to meet her roommate, Blanca. We ate at about 9:30pm and we didn't leave until after midnight. We talked and talked and talked and she just graduated from college this year (they do 5 years) and so she was very proud of this and showed us some of her videos and projects and such from class which was really interesting. She is so nice and so much fun, I'm reaaaally going to miss her and hanging out with her. So yet again, another hard goodbye.
Helena's meal she cooked for us.

Tuesday we had our final day of lecture! NEVER thought this day would come... yaaaay!! After class I came home and Maria had made my favorite.. paella.. for my last lunch here in Granada. It was delicious as per usual! :) Then after lunch I went back to the CLM to study for my Phonetics exam that we had that night. Easy Peasy.
Wednesday: MY LAST DAY IN GRANADA, SPAIN
Kelsey and I had our FINAL exams and presentations for our Intensive course. I did my presentation on Mill Pond so that was really fun :) They enjoyed the pictures and had lots of questions about my job so it was fun to share that with the class.
Kelsey and I with our first professor, Sonia.

and again with our second prof, Carmen.

Then.. I had to say goodbye to Veronica. CRY CRY CRY. :'(

We about squeezed the life out of eachother, luckily she comes to Pella once a year for a conference so we will get to see her again!

Finally... we celebrated!! We went out to our little Mexican restaurant and had margs and stuffed ourselves. Then we shopped til we... had no more money.. and enjoyed the rest of the views and places we love in Granada with all of my closet friends here. It was an absolutely wonderful and perfect day. But saying goodbye was the worst thing imaginable. I balled. balled. when I had to say goodbye to them. It sucked, a lot. :''''( They all live in different states far away and I don't know when I will get to see them again, but I'm hoping soon!!!!
LOVE these girls.
Me, Fatima, Anna Marie, Brielle, Kelsey, and Katie
(Rob took the shot)  :)

That night I went home to my final dinner with Maria, Paco, and Tayler. Again, it was suuuper emotional and I can't begin to explain how all this makes me feel besides overwhelmed.
Then I packed up... gave them HUGE hugs and kisses before I went to bed.. My flight leaves from Granada at 7am and I need to catch a bus there at 5am.

That morning Maria woke up with me at 4am and had breakfast with me. She gave me huge hugs and told me she loved me and that I'm always welcome in her home.. once again, she made me cry. Then I gave Tayler a big hug and was on my way.
I had a 30 minute horrible walk with my bags to the bus station that took me to the airport. Then everything went smoothly. I traveled with 2 other gals from Granada to Madrid and then Madrid to Chicago. All of my flights were on time and finally.. I reached Des Moines where I was greeted by my mom and dad :) LOVE.

It was a whirlwind, a blast, a struggle, and a DREAM. I couldn't have asked for anything more and I wouldn't change a thing about this opportunity. I loved it, and made incredible bonds with so many people. I had an incredible experience abroad.
Love my family <3
BACK TO REALITY.

Momma Comes to Spain!

She made it!! On Wednesday afternoon mom flew out of the Des Moines airport and arrived in Granada on Thursday the 26th! Her phone wouldn't work in Spain so she ended up reaching the bus station.. without me there waiting to greet her! bummerrr
Luckily a nice lady let her use her phone and then.. we were reunited, tears included of course.
Since mom was tired from traveling for forever (you should ask her about her plane ride ;) we ate a couple of bocadillos (sandwiches) in the sunshine and just took in the view of Granada; then we went to our hostel called White Nest which was adorable! The decoration and design was cute and it was nice to get away from my room for a few days.. SPACE! yee

                                                                   White Nest!
After we got situated we went up to San Nicolas which has an amazing view over looking the Alhambra to watch the sunset. It was gorgeous! Then we headed back to the center of the city so I could show my mom around a bit :)

                                                                 The Alhambra

                                                                    City Center!

Day 2
We got to spend another beautiful sunny day in Granada and we started out by going to out for churros con chocolate for breakfast! They got the stamp of approval of course..along with the EXTRA strong coffee Spain has to offer. haha
Mom enjoying her first churros!
Then.. shopping! What else :)
We got some cute Spanish/European clothes.. even for Ross! Oh.. and shoes. =)
I also showed my mom my route to school, my volunteer sites, and the park I run in called Garcia Lorca and the Cathedral.

I love everything about this picture. hahaa
This is the street that my school is on. So I see this everryyy day.
Orange Trees! m mm good

For dinner we had shawarma.. yum! Basically I got to show her around my stomping grounds and the sites that I see every day here. :)
                                                                 Delish!
Day 3
There is a huge festival in Sevilla, Spain that is a week long event called Las Ferias. Lucky for us we got to experience it first hand! ...except it rained. We started out the day by looking around the city. I got to show my mom some of the "hot spots" that I saw when we had our trip to Sevilla earlier this semester. Then we saw a big group of Flamenco dancers and followed them around for a bit... so fun! and met an older fella from Holland who was super nice and full of information. We spent the day walking around the Feria and taking in the cultural experiences of it all. I also noticed I must have a fetish with cute little Spanish kids.. because my camera was loaded with them after this day. haha
The crops.. aka olive trees are all over the land.

                                                          The Cathedral in Sevilla

The inside of the Cathedral.. so neat!

Flamenco ladies!!
This HAS to be the Spanish version of the Red Hat Ladies..
                                                                 How adorable :)
All sorts of strange street entertainment in Sevilla

This is built every single year at a cost of about a half a mil OOf
They never repeat and make a new design every year.
Las Ferias!!
So many families hanging out together. This fair costs unbelievable amounts of money and most of the "tents" that they hang out in during the day are heritable so not many new families have a chance to join them. The rich of the rich have the tents. They also spend about 30 thousand dollars in this week long event providing food and drinks for their family and employees they invite. This is along with the monthly fee of the tent location. ayyyiiyii

Eating and hangin' out in the tents

                                                               Flamenco Dancing!

Caught this moment at the perfect time :)

The horses were thiiiirstyy

The carnival side of the Feria.
This ride was so entertaining.. I'm pretty sure this ride along with may others would never fly in the US, not so safe that is for sure. woop
Merry Go Round --Spain version
Wine Stand

This is what most of the little boys were wearing for the fair. caaute!
awhh matching outfits!

I don't think he was very in to riding the mini-pony..

Shorts and socks.. :) ah! adorable.

The haunted house. Real live people used even.
The meat and fish in Spain are served with the head.. yes, I know. Weird for us.
But, for them it shows that the product is fresh.

Day 4 Day 5 Day 6
To Lagos, Portugal we gooo!!
I loved it here so much that I wanted to go back, bad. and we got to!! The weather wasn't as great as the first time around.. but we still got some great beach time in! I mean.. what else would my mom and I rather be doing than soaking up the sun on  beautiful beach together. annnnd she started the Hunger Games series! eek! Also.. NahNahBah (the burger place) was closed when we tried to go! waah :( BUT we found a great Mexican place to eat which was also really yummy! ..after being with me for just a few days mom already got the "food bug"which means.. all you think about, dream about even.. is food. YIKES. haha I miss American food, a lot.

Yepp, that is mom up there! So nuts!

Climbin' the cliffs! The view was sooo neat!

Sunset on the beach :)

Momma and me!

Welp, it was a bit harder coming down needless to say. ha
The view.. ahhh

Chillen' on the side of the cliffs!
Adios Lagos! I hope we meet again :)
Day 7
BACK TO GRANADA!!
May 3rd is a special holiday in Spain called Dia de la Cruz (Day of the Cross) so there was a lot going on! First we went to the Alhambra. (*fun fact: it is the 2nd most viewed attraction in Europe behind the Eiffel Tower) and saw the sites there and then watched a Flamenco show.. kind of like what a dance recital would be like for us in the US. It was outside and was even being broadcast, so that was fun! Otherwise we spent the day soaking up the culture and the beautiful crosses displayed around the city and ate tapas and drank tinto de verano together.
Alhambra
Blue hair, whaat? hm.
Hangin' out at the Alhambra!
Not sure what this statue is all about, but there were lots of people there sketching it.
hike-hike-hike

Enjoying Granada :)
Flamenco style Moped!!

...only in Spain. haha
City Center in Granada for the Flamenco show!
yepp. made the news.
Ahh so cute!

The Flamenco dancing was so powerful, we definitely enjoyed ourselves :)
There are many crosses displayed around town. All of the crosses are made with flowers.

After our not so wonderful stay in a hostal the previous night.. again, ask mom for details about that awful place boooo, I took mom to MY house!
She got to see where I live and meet my host parents and their son's wife Sara which was a blast! and great practice for my translating skills :) Maria made us lunch which was a type of ham ball soaked in a dressing and with baked veggies, potatoes cooked with hot peppers and olive oil,and of course bread. It was a fun experience for all of us because mom got to "step in to my shoes" for a bit and eat like we do here in Spain every day. They even broke out the wine for us! Speciaaaal :)

My host parents! Maria and Paco :)

Before we called it a night, we went to Garcia Lorca to see the beautiful fountains in the night because they change color and are just really cool to witness. Overall, a wonderful time in Granada!

Day 8
My friend Brielle, my mom, and I all headed to Nerja for a day adventure on Friday. I would have to say it makes a good run at my favorite city in all of Spain. Granada is still winning.. I may be a bit biased, but none the less they are both great. The city was all white, clean, and had really neat plants.. like something you would see in a Dr. Seuss book! haha We had great luck and our hostel was literally right next to the bus station so we didn't have to lug around our god forsaken luggage around too far.. too many heavy suitcases blaah. Our hostel was nice and had a great view!! Topped the last hostel we stayed at in Granada by a miiiiile.
Helloooo Nerja!

Am I right, Dr. Seuss??
Beautiful flowers :)

The city!
Me and Brielle :)
Sidewalk.. at least as we know it.. is not a thing here. This is what it looks like!

Anywho, we walked down to the beach and hung out there for awhile and then ate at a cute little restaurant on the beach called Yelmo that has a specialty in Paella.. bottomless paella no less.

The PAELLA!

After spending time on the beach soaking up the sunshine we headed to Las Cuevas (the caves).
This. Was. Unreal.
Really... the cave was a cavern. It has to be one of the greatest wonders of the world and was discovered actually pretty recently by a bunch of teenagers who stumbled upon it when they were looking for bats. It was sooo spacious and tall and just huge. My pictures can't begin to do it justice but I think it is probly one of the coolest things I have ever witnessed in my life.

This is what was above the cave. so strange.

For the night, we headed to the city center and ate, took pictures, saw a crazy cat man.... and enjoyed ourselves. Great day in Nerja!

Just wait..

What a beautiful beach.

Another Dr. Seuss tree.

hahahaa YES.
Okay.. this man puts the "cat lady" to shame.

Day 9
In the morning we headed out to Malaga since mom was flying out of there in the bright and EARLY am on the 6th of May. We trucked our heavy heavy luggage to our hostel... wait, Brielle's hostel (confusion with booking for 1 not 3 woop... one of my only flaws with all this planning I must admit, I am proud!) and left that stuff there, pheew. THEN drum roll pleeeeeease... we went to this outdoor shopping center via train to see the Hunger Games, IN ENGLISH!! It just came out in Spain a week ago and well obviously they are all in Spanish but Malaga has a few movies in their original language with Spanish subtitles.. so we saw it! and wow, it was just great! BUT I am so happy I read the books before because there is just so much detail not mentioned. anyway, it was great! Then we shopped around anddd... headed to the airport :( :(

Day 10...kind of.
Mom and I sat in the airport for a real long time.. which was nice actually. I wasn't even mad about it. We got to chat and play cards and hang out just the two of us before she had to fly back home :( We even had some entertainment at about 2am.. two reeeeeally drunk people from England were sitting near us at Starbucks and we learned that he had "fallen asleep" and missed his flight back to England and apparently his friend had thrown up on her flight and got kicked off. Precious. So they were hanging out bothering people with their drunk smelly selves all night.. and when mom was checking her bags we saw them again rolling around on the airport floor making out. Jeeesh. So anyway, at about 4:30am mom checked in. I gave her the BIGGEST hug in the world and cried my eyes out. haha
...turns out there were some major storms in Chicago when mom was FINALLY about to land after pshh, I dunno 15 hours or so of traveling.. and was diverted to Indiana after her 9 hour plane ride from Madrid..and then luckily caught a plane to Des Moines at 10 something or other while waiting 3 hours for the plane to take off.. so finally Ross picked her up in the airport at a little after 1am when she was sposed to get in at 6:30pm. What a longggg travel time. OOFTA. So minus this, and a couple other flaws our trip together was a total success.

We had an absolutely wonderful time together in Spain and well... for the first time, I am ready to come home. I have NINE days left in Spain. I cannot believe it, where did the time go?! I have jam packed all of those days with really fun things with my friends here who I am going to miss soooo much since they live in other states like Michigan and Texas boo. So, I will be enjoying every last second of my experience here!
I wouldn't change it for the world.
